Charvarius Ward out with injured groin for San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers spent big to lure Charvarius Ward in free agency, but the former Chiefs cornerback will be out a couple of weeks due to injury.
The San Francisco 49ers spent big this offseason in free agency hoping to upgrade their secondary with the addition of former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward. Unfortunately, Ward has been injured in Niners’ training camp and now head coach Kyle Shanahan says he’s likely to miss the next couple of weeks with a groin muscle strain.
Per Shanahan, Ward had a “little setback” with the strain and the 49ers aren’t going to rush anything. The goal is likely to allow him to rest for much of the preseason and make sure he stays ready for Week 1 of the regular season.
Ward signed with San Francisco this offseason in free agency after hitting the open market for the first time. He landed a three-year deal worth just north of $40 million, and the Chiefs watched him leave after watching him grow with the defense for the last four years.
The Chiefs originally landed Ward in a preseason player-for-player deal with the Dallas Cowboys back in 2018 when they sent offensive lineman Parker Ehinger over for Ward, who’d signed with Dallas as a rookie free agent out of Middle Tennessee State. From there, Ward showed instant promise and earned rotational reps on defense in his first year before turning into a full-time starter when the Chiefs switched out Bob Sutton for Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator.
Ward played a total of four seasons for the Chiefs and had 4 interceptions and 29 pass deflections in 43 total starts.
