Can Joshua Williams push for a starting role?

The Chiefs’ draft class of 10 players was bound to produce some younger players who would impress at training camp, especially given that four of those picks came in the first two rounds of the draft. So far, most of those players look the part, but one youngster who has caught our eye a bit unexpectedly is the ultimate project of the draft class.

The early returns on fourth-round pick Joshua Williams have looked quite good—enough that defensive coaches are giving him reps with the first-team defense in the slot.

Remember Williams was a small-school project who was going to likely need a year (or the better part of it) before becoming a dependable asset in the Chiefs’ secondary. He’s making the leap to the NFL from Fayetteville State—as the first rookie drafted thiss year from an HBCU—and even general manager Brett Veach stated one of the best things about him was his teachability when making mistakes during the Senior Bowl.

The hope that was Wiliams would take well to coaching in camp and grow throughout the season, but at this point, he might surprise as this year’s L’Jarius Sneed—a fourth round corner who is surprisingly ready early in his rookie campaign.
