Breaking down 2022 Chiefs competition: EDGE rusher
By Grant Tuttle
#59 Joshua Kaindoh
College: Florida State
Years Pro: 2 (23 years old)
Chance of Making the Roster: High
Josh Kaindoh is relatively unknown to the national media but to some of the Chiefs faithful, he is the secret weapon. While it makes for an intriguing conspiracy theory as to why the Chiefs did not pursue more options at EDGE during the offseason, we truly know very little about where Kaindoh is in his development. After a nice start in which he was given some playing time, Kaindoh sustained an ankle injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season during the week four matchup against the Eagles. It seems likely that Kaindoh gets a serious look this season after showing such an abundance of potential in the predraft process.
#56 George Karlaftis
College: Purdue
Years Pro: Rookie
Chance of Making the Roster: Lock
The Chiefs drafted a defensive end in the first round for the first time since 2014 when they took Dee Ford. George Karlaftis enters the NFL in a great situation. Karlaftis will likely get early opportunities to fill in a role at EDGE. There are some early concerns with his agility and ability to bend around the edge but his power and motor are unquestioned. Karlaftis will be a contributor early and could be the starter by Week 1.
#92 Shilique Calhoun
College: Michigan State
Years Pro: 6 (30 years old)
Chance of Making the Roster: Low
Shilique Calhoun is no youngster. At 30, he has spent time with the Raiders, Patriots, and 49ers. A former 3rd round pick, Calhoun was regarded as a player with a high ceiling. Unfortunately, his career has never really taken off. He has been on and off practice squads his entire career and has only one start and two and a half sacks to his name. Calhoun could be a special teams contributor, but it seems likely that he does not get a spot over younger players.
