The experiment to convert Mark Vital into an NFL tight end is officially over—at least as an aim for the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff.

One of the more interesting, yet minor, subplots to the 2022 preseason for the Kansas City Chiefs could be found at tight end, where the team was hoping to turn yet another former college basketball star into a professional football player. Unfortunately for Mark Vital, the experiment did not last all that long.

On Thursday, the Chiefs addressed a significant need at defensive end with the signing of veteran Carlos Dunlap to a one-year deal. In order to clear roster space, the Chiefs released Vital.

While it’s still quite possible for Vital to linger in some way around the Chiefs—perhaps by returning at a future date when other players are cut or by joining the practice squad—it’s quite telling that other longshot tight ends are still on the roster. Some of those names hoping to make their presence felt include Matt Bushman and Jordan Franks—guys who are simply more pro-ready than Vital.

As for Vital, he was one of college basketball players best defenders and rebounders during his tenure with the Baylor Bears. Not only did Vital win a national championship while at Baylor, but he also was a two-time semi-finalist for Defensive Player of the Year. His large frame, great hands, and physical nature made him an obvious target to turn the corner as a tight end, but the Chiefs have moved on. The Chiefs have had great success with the likes of Tony Gonzalez in the past, but that’s also true of role players like Ross Travis and Demetrius Harris.

Vital will now hope to find another place to call home with plenty of preseason football left before the ’22 season begins.
