Tight end Jody Fortson

Tight end Jody Fortson is by far this list’s biggest boom or bust. But, backup tight ends can be volatile for fantasy teams. If Fortson picks up where he left off in 2021, his fantasy stock should skyrocket.

Fortson missed much of 2021 with an Achilles injury suffered in Week 6 against the Washington Commanders. Although he only logged five receptions before the injury, the preseason-fan-favorite Fortson greatly exceeded expectations. In the four games Fortson recorded any stats, he exceeded his projected fantasy output that week. His two touchdowns in five targets make for an astounding, if not unsustainable, watermark.

Fortson’s jump-ball connection with Mahomes is an underrated asset in the red zone, a prime area for a player’s fantasy profile. Fortson may not stretch the field or bring much in the blocking game, but he has sure hands and a large catch radius, great for scoring touchdowns or picking up receiving yards in bunches.

Currently, Fortson doesn’t even register an ADP, that is how rarely he is drafted. Fortson would likely be a priority free agent, especially with an uncertain position on the Kansas City depth chart. However, why not take a chance on him? Fortson exceeded the league’s tight end average fantasy points threshold in half his 2021 games. If that was a trend over 17 games, fantasy managers would be jumping all over Fortson. If you find yourself with a need at tight end, Fortson would be a smart sleeper pickup.
