The start of training camp is finally on the horizon. The NFL’s “dead zone” between the NFL Draft and the start of training camp can feel painfully slow, but thankfully the end is in sight. With the Kansas City Chiefs reporting to training camp in short order, I thought it was a good time to make my best guess at how the roster will look when all is said and done.

Once camp starts we will finally get the wave of reports on which players are standing out that we have been so hungry for these past few months. Then we’ll come to the preseason games where the pecking order of players will become even more clear. At that point, the final 53-man roster will be easier to anticipate, but it’s always fun to try and predict how things will go before all the “camp buzz” stories come out.

Below is my 53-man roster prediction going into training camp. I’ve listed the players that I believe will make it for each position group with a few thoughts about who did and didn’t make the cut. Let’s start things off with the quarterbacks.

Quarterbacks (2)

  1. Patrick Mahomes
  2. Chad Henne

This one is pretty easy. Obviously, Patrick Mahomes is the clear starter and I don’t see Chad Henne having any real competition for the backup spot. I like Shane Buechele as a developmental third guy, but he just doesn’t have enough experience to beat out a veteran like Henne on a team that has Super Bowl goals. Buechele will likely end up on the practice squad, but they need bodies elsewhere on the 53-man roster and the Chiefs have shown that they are comfortable only carrying two QBs on the active roster.

Next up, the running backs.
