Corey Coleman, wide receiver

There’s no shortage of wide receivers making their names known to the coaching staff (and those on the outside) through the spring for the Chiefs, but Corey Coleman hasn’t been one of them. Instead, Matthew Sexton is earning praise from Patrick Mahomes, Justyn Ross is making Travis Kelce shake his head, and Josh Gordon is reminding folks not to count him out.

Given that the Chiefs already have so many other new faces in town jostling for targets with assumed spots, the lack of buzz for Coleman through OTAs is disconcerting—at least for those who were hoping he could turn into a feel-good story for this Chiefs roster.

Remember, Coleman hasn’t played a single official snap of professional football since the 2018 season—and even then he only caught 5 passes in 8 games for the New York Giants. Before that, he was a bust of a former first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns as recently as 2016, a player who has broken his hand twice, tore an ACL, and didn’t help his own cause with a me-first attitude.

While Coleman struck out with those two franchises as well as the Patriots and Bills, the Chiefs were hoping that a fresh start and a mature approach might unlock something in the 2015 Biletnikoff winner as the nation’s top wide receiver. Remember, he had 20 touchdown catches in a single season at Baylor before entering the draft with a burst that would make anyone jealous.

Coleman needs to turn some heads quick or else he’s going to be among the first jettisoned from a crowded WR group.
