KC Chiefs: Five moves Brett Veach deserves more credit for
Trading Parker Ehinger for Charvarius Ward
This trade, in my humble opinion, is likely the best trade Brett Veach has ever made in terms of value in, value out. Towards the end of August 2018, the Chiefs traded guard Parker Ehinger to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for undrafted cornerback Charavarius Ward.
This trade is amazing in the sense that the Chiefs traded an offensive lineman that they likely would have waived a couple of days later for a cornerback who gave them well over 3,000 snaps of above-average play on defense. Since the trade, Ehinger has played just over 60 offensive snaps for Baltimore and Detroit and has never been able to nail down a starting role.
It is fair to say Charvarius Ward was never an elite corner while in Kansas City but he was a consistent starter for three seasons on a successful team. He would draw the opponent’s #1 receiver more times than any other Chiefs corner and did a serviceable job, most of the time. In another move involving San Francisco, Ward signed a three-year contract with the Niners this past March, thus ending his Kansas City tenure. With him gone, the Chiefs are going to have to replace him, and they brought in several options to do so.
This trade won’t be the most memorable one for Brett Veach but I do believe that this move was critical for a Chiefs defense that played well enough to win Super Bowl LIV a couple of years ago.
