Ndamukong Suh – Defensive Tackle
Ndamukong Suh is the biggest household name on this list. At the peak of his career, he was one of the most physically dominant defensive tackles in the NFL. Those days are in the past now, but the 35-year-old Suh was still a solid contributor to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the past few seasons. Suh put up 6 sacks from the interior in both 2020 and 2021. His 57.1 run defense grade and 54.3 pass-rush grade from PFF weren’t great, but he also played almost 800 snaps last year. That amount of snaps for a player his age is going to wear a guy down. I think it is reasonable to believe that his efficiency could go up if he played a more limited number of snaps.
The Chiefs have Chris Jones, Derrick Nnadi, Taylor Stallworth, and Tershawn Wharton to rotate in the interior, but adding another veteran like Suh would definitely bolster the group. Jones, Stallworth, and Wharton are all more athletic interior players who don’t specialize in stopping the run. Nnadi is really the only player that fits that mold. Suh would give them another physical presence in the interior.
I don’t know what kind of salary Suh will command. His name alone will probably warrant a bigger amount than either Flowers or Nassib would, but adding a proven winner and veteran to the defense might just be worth it. If the Chiefs want to add a younger option than Suh on the interior, there is a good option still available (if he is healthy).
