OT Ja’Wuan James

Offensive tackle Ja’Wuan James may not be the franchise player the Denver Broncos thought he was, but he could bring some valuable depth to Kansas City.

James should be a familiar name to Chiefs fans, for all the wrong reasons. After Denver signed James to a four-year, $51 million contract, James only played in three games for the team. Between two major injuries and James opting out of the 2020 season, his contract is still a sore point for Broncos fans. James tore his Achilles prior to the 2021 season, marking the end of his tenure in Denver. The Baltimore Ravens were still quick to acquire James on a cheap two-year deal. He was not active in 2021 for the Ravens but did start practicing on Dec. 8, 2021.

Baltimore’s recent acquisitions at the position have made James an expendable player. That is how his contract seems, as Baltimore can release James and save $3 million while inducing $250,000 in dead cap. The team has more pressing positions of need and can use the money from cutting James.

James would be a backup plan for Kansas City, pun intended. If one or more of the depth players at tackle do not work out, James should warrant a call. He was a five-year starter in Miami at right tackle, amongst the league’s best as well. If the Chiefs want a cheap tackle with significant starting experience, James could be the one.
