3. Will Shields

Draft Details: 3rd round, 1993

Key Stat: 223 starts

When Will Shields took the field as the starting right guard for the Chiefs his rookie season, expectations were fairly high. He was a third-round pick from an esteemed Nebraska program after winning the 1992 Outland Trophy and being named a first-team All-American. However, no one could have predicted just how good this pick would be.

From the day he subbed in for Dave Szott in Week 1 of the ’93 season until his final game as a pro, Shields never once missed a single game in his 14 NFL seasons. He was the team’s starting right guard for an incredible 4,864 days and in that time, he went to 12 consecutive Pro Bowls and made an astounding 223 starts.

It might sound weird to put an interior offensive lineman as one of the best three picks a franchise has ever made, but the truth is that NFL history has seen very, very few linemen with the sustained dominance that belonged to Shields. Even while playing alongside other Hall of Fame linemen, Shields was a man apart and that’s why he’s so high on this list of best draft picks.
