QB Chad Henne

Quarterback Chad Henne once seemed a QB2 lock until he retired, but recent moves in Kansas City may signal otherwise.

Henne is by far the team’s oldest player, turning 37 years old before the season’s end. He has extended his career in Kansas City after joining the team in 2018. He has only played in eight games as a Chief, but he is a reliable backup. From the regular season to his postseason heroics, Henne holds a special place in Chiefs fandom’s hearts.

It was slightly surprising that Henne came back for another year in Kanas City. He has nothing left to prove in the NFL, beyond winning another Super Bowl ring. But, the Chiefs brought the veteran back on a one-year deal for the 2022 season.

Henne’s $3.265 million deal is fully guaranteed, something that made his 2022 roster spot a virtual lock earlier this year. However, Kansas City has brought in multiple quarterback options behind Patrick Mahomes. First, they signed former preseason darling Anthony Gordon, bringing the quarterback room to four players. Then, Kansa City signed Dustin Crum, 2022’s top undrafted quarterback, to a three-year deal. That makes five quarterbacks competing for two or three roster spots.

Henne’s contract shows Kansas City’s confidence and trust in him. But, it is surprising to see so many resources spent on a position the Chiefs are set at for the foreseeable future. If the team becomes enamored with Crum, Gordon, or another option, the team could make Henne retire earlier than expected.
