Top 5 draft classes in Kansas City Chiefs history
By Grant Tuttle
3. 2017 DRAFT CLASS
Class in its entirety:
- R1 Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech
- R2 Tanoh Kpassagnon, EDGE, Villanova
- R3 Kareem Hunt, RB, Toledo
- R4 Jehu Chesson, WR, Michigan
- R5 Ukeme Eligwe, EDGE, Georgia Southern
- R6 Leon McQuay, S, USC
Most Notable players:
There’s truly one superstar, one good player, and one role player. This meets the criteria for a very good draft until you take into consideration that Patrick Mahomes was drafted at 10 overall in a major trade-up. Mahomes is on a historic pace and could be one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history when it is all said and done. Although it is bending the rules a little, the impact of Patrick Mahomes is what truly moved this class into the top three.
Kareem Hunt in his short time in Kansas City was very productive. Due to some legal issues and lying to the Chiefs brass about said issues, Kareem Hunt was released from the team after posting 2,151 rushing yards and 25 total touchdowns in two seasons.
Tanoh Kpassagnon is a starter at the average to slightly below average caliber. While he never truly hit his highest ceiling, Kpassagnon was a functional piece of the Kansas City defense for the years he spent with the Chiefs.
Impact on Chiefs history:
There may be no draft that has had more of an impact on Chiefs history. That can happen when you take one of the best football players in NFL history at the quarterback position. With that in mind, this draft class only had one truly impactful player to the Chiefs franchise.
Patrick Mahomes being taken in this draft made Kansas City a formidable team all by himself. Although the others didn’t work out the way that many had hoped with the other picks, Patrick Mahomes puts the draft class in the top three on his own.
