The Kansas City Chiefs nabbed a pair of talented defensive players in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.

First, the team selected Washington cornerback Trent McDuffie with the 21st overall pick. Then they added Purdue defensive end George Karlaftis at pick 29.

McDuffie was considered one of the best cornerback prospects in the class after leaving Washington upon the completion of his junior season.

A former 4-star recruit, McDuffie finished his career with the Huskies with 94 tackles, one sack and two interceptions. In his final season he played almost exclusively on the outside, albeit in a zone scheme.

In a division that now features Russell Wilson, Davante Adams and Justin Herbert having solid defensive backs is a must – and that’s what McDuffie is from day one.

KC’s second selection, Karlaftis, is a great power rusher who will likely make an immediate impact.

He started turning heads in 2019 as a freshman, but slowly slipped down draft boards in the last few weeks after being projected as a top 10 pick during the college football season.

Karlaftis finished his collegiate career with 97 tackles, 29 TFL and 14 sacks. He looks a lot like another former Boilermaker – Ryan Kerrigan.
