Deebo Samuel

Of all of the deals proposed for the Chiefs over the last few weeks, this one feels like the biggest stretch.

Yes, the Chiefs could use a playmaker given the loss of Tyreek Hill. They signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster but the void is still there for a game-altering playmaker, which is why the Chiefs are often linked with draft talents like George Pickens and Jameson Williams in mock drafts.

Deebo Samuel is one of the NFL’s most dynamic young skill position players, but he’s only a couple of years younger than the Cheetah himself. He’s also due for a significant payday in free agency next spring, which means that the Chiefs would have dealt a better playmaker wanting to break the bank for a slightly less proven player who also wants to break the bank. Maybe Samuel is younger and would be a bit cheaper, but Hill was a franchise record-holder and fan favorite. The swap just wouldn’t make sense.

It should also be said that other teams are interested in Samuel and they have the sort of cap space and draft assets to lure the San Francisco 49ers into a deal—namely the New. York Jets are looking for an ideal weapon to pair with Zach Wilson as the star tandem for the future. The idea of Samuel is nice for K.C. but it just doesn’t make as much sense in the greater scheme of things. That said, anything can happen on draft weekend.
