The Kansas City Chiefs have checked out FAU defensive back Zyon Gilbert before the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs have certainly been doing their homework when it comes to potential additions to the secondary in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft. The latest prospect hoping to earn the team’s attention and trust is Zyon Gilbert, a promising defensive back from Florida Atlantic University.

According to Justin Melo, Gilbert took some time to visit Arrowhead as one of the Chiefs’ alloted prospect visits before the draft—where each team is allowed a total of 30.  Other teams reportedly interested in Gilbert include the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins.

Gilbert comes to the Chiefs with plenty of experience at FAU and a long, lean frame with elite top speed and good hands. He had 247 total tackles over five seasons at FAU with 5 interceptions and 26 passes deflected in that span. He also had a sack and forced fumble last season.

For the Chiefs, Gilbert would be a developmental play which makes sense given the long-term needs in the secondary. Rashad Fenton and L’Jarius Sneed are the holdovers at cornerback with Deandre Baker also in the mix, but Chris Lammons found himself in legal troubles this offseason and Mike Hughes and Charvarius Ward both found new homes in free agency.

For the Chiefs, it’s going to be important to come away with two or even three defensive backs to bolster the unit for the next era of the defense and that includes need for high-ceiling talent as well as more raw prospects who could grow into something useful while earning reps on special teams.
