3rd round – Neil Farrell Jr., DL, LSU

This is really a fortuitous scenario for the Chiefs here through three rounds because the team has answered the call for long-term investment at wide receiver while also aiding the defense at multiple levels. The cherry on top of this on Day Two would be the ability to also add on an interior presence like Neil Farrell Jr. to dramatically bolster the defensive front this offseason.

When people talk about the need of the Chiefs along the defensive line, they’re mostly referring to major concerns with the pass rush. Frank Clark has a problem staying healthy. Melvin Ingram remains unsigned (as of press time). Mike Danna is a rotational part, but Joshua Kaindoh is very raw. The good news is that Boye Mafe and Josh Paschal have that position taken care of.

The Chiefs have Chris Jones as an interior anchor but he’s also versatile enough to slide out wide at times and he’s also expensive. The Chiefs just re-signed Derrick Nnadi but that was for a single season. Fortunately, the Chiefs also have Khalen Saunders and Turk Wharton along the interior, but there’s room here for some stiff competition and an even younger player who will be around for the next four or more years.

Enter Farrell, a huge frame of a man who weighs 330 and stands 6’4 out of LSU. Farrell has years of game tape against elite competition and came away with 9.5 tackles for loss last season alone. He moves well for his size and occupies multiple blockers, and Nick Bolton would love the ability to play behind this guy.

Pro comps here include D.J. Reader and Nnadi himself, so it wouldn’t hurt the Chiefs to add another stout young presence to help keep the trenches deep for years to come.
