The Kansas City Chiefs have been called a logical landing spot for Jadeveon Clowney.

While most of the National Football League’s most well-known free agents have found a place to call home for the 2022 season, there are still a few bigger names waiting for the right opportunity to come along. Kansas City Chiefs fans remain very curious about the future of safety Tyrann Mathieu and where he might play next, but the team has also been mentioned in conjunction with another familiar face in defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowney has been a free agent fixture over the past few seasons as a former top overall draft selection and college superstar who has been forced to take a series of one-year deals. In 2019, he played on the tag for $15 million with the Houston Texans. In 2020, he signed for $13 million with the Tennessee Titans, and last season he earned $8 million to suit up for the Cleveland Browns. Now a free agent once again, is he destined for another single-season contract?

The Chiefs have shown zero interest in Clowney (and not much at all in the free-agent pass rushing market in general), but that hasn’t stopped the Sporting News from calling the Chiefs a logical fit for Clowney once he decides to land. Kansas City is not the only market that makes sense, but the need is there, the finances are there, and it’s an easy sell.

Right now, the Chiefs have Frank Clark under contract through ’22 and then Michael Danna and Joshua Kaindoh locked up long-term. Danna is a nice rotational body while Kaindoh is completely unproven as a raw project, while Clark himself has a tough time staying healthy for any reasonable stretch. While the Chiefs are bound to draft someone, they could also use a veteran to fortify the defensive front.

Last season for the Browns, Clowney enjoyed a solid season against the run while showing a bit more disruption than in recent years with 9 sacks and 32 pressures in 14 starts. He also just turned 29 so it seems reasonable to assume he’s got more left in the tank.
