Former Utah safety Vonte Davis has been the subject of reported interest for the Kansas City Chiefs as they prepare for the 2022 NFL Draft.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Pro Football Network, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers are two of the NFL franchises who have turned their attention and/or showcased some interest in former Utah safety Vonte Davis ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Davis, who weighs in at 6’1 and 207 lbs., came in a strong transfer from Blinn College and started the last two years for the Utes at free safety on a defense that also featured potential first-round linebacker Devin Lloyd. Davis earned himself a second-team All-Pac 12 selection after putting up a strong full season in his final year with the Utes, helping them get to their first-ever Rose Bowl appearance.

Last season, Davis had 63 total tackles and 1 forced fumble, and 1 interception for Utah, a year after leading the two with 2 interceptions in only five games during a COVID-abbreviated 2020 season. Davis came up big when the stakes were highest, especially in wins over ranked opponents like Oregon or Arizona State this season or USC in ’20.

Coming into the draft, the Chiefs are likely going to make multiple selections in the draft to help bolster the secondary and it makes sense to focus on safety after watching three-quarters of the team’s safeties from last year hit free agency. Armani Watts already signed with the Indianapolis Colts and Dan Sorensen found a home with the New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile, Tyrann Mathieu remains a free agent but one who is unlikely to re-sign in K.C.

The Chiefs have 12 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, including two in each of the first four rounds.
