Cornerback

The Chiefs have had a slow, steady drip of talent leaving the roster at this position for the last several years. This should be the year the Chiefs try to invest a bit more than normal to counter the losses.

This spring, Charvarius Ward left the Chiefs for greener (financial) pastures in San Francisco. Last year, Bashaud Breeland was a popular candidate to return until he signed a one-year deal with Minnesota. The year before that, Kendall Fuller returned to Washington on a big-money deal, and the spring before that featured Steven Nelson leaving for Pittsburgh. And just think that Marcus Peters was traded before all these guys left.

While it’s stretched over a long period of time, these sorts of player departures begin to add up over time. That’s five starters in five years at a position that demands quantity and quality. It’s a testament to Brett Veach that he’s been able to keep the cupboards stocked all these seasons.

In addition to Mike Hughes leaving this season, both Deandre Baker and Rashad Fenton are free agents a year from now. That would leave L’Jarius Sneed as the lone cornerback lingering from the current bunch of starters, which means the Chiefs could use multiple players for the short-term and the long-term both.
