The Kansas City Chiefs continue to bring in a steady parade of prospects through Arrowhead Stadium as the 2022 NFL Draft gets closer. One of the most recent invitations to visit was offered to former Pittsburgh tight end Lucas Krull.

Krull stated on Twitter on Wednesday that he had a “great visit” with the Chiefs the day before, which he hopes bodes well for him in the upcoming draft at the end of April.

Krull is originally a local product from the K.C. area, having starred in multiple sports at Mill Valley High School in Shawnee, Kansas. From there, Krull took a rather circuitous route to get to the present point, as he originally chose to pursue baseball with a scholarship at Arkansas. When things didn’t work out there, he decided to go the JuCo route and ultimately gave up on the sport and decided to switch back to football.

Former Pitt tight end Lucas Krull is the latest prospect to visit the Chiefs before the 2022 NFL Draft at month’s end.

Krull’s natural athletic profile and size brought an offer from Florida to play, but playing time was sparse behind Kyle Pitts, so he transferred to Pittsburgh to catch passes from Kenny Pickett. The end result was a breakout campaign years in the making this past season with 38 catches for 451 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Krull certainly looks the part as a 6’6, 255 lb. tight end and his athletic makeup is solid, but scouts have questions about his blocking and ability to create separation at the next level. Krull is also an older prospect who will be 24 in July. That said, the Chiefs are likely profiling potential undrafted prospects or someone to take with four seventh-round picks at their disposal. That means these prospects will have some discernible flaws in their game.

As for the position, the Chiefs are going to have to think about the future at tight end sooner than later with Travis Kelce reaching his mid-thirties, but for now, they still employ the best in the game. They also have a host of young players waiting in the wings hoping to make the active roster or at least hang around for another year on the practice squad, a list of names headed by Noah Gray, Jody Fortson, Mark Vital, and more.
