The Indianapolis Colts have welcomed a former member of the Kansas City Chiefs to the roster this offseason with the signing of safety Armani Watts. Team owner Jim Irsay tweeted out the news on Tuesday afternoon.

The Colts lost safety George Odum earlier this offseason to a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers, so Watts helps to fill a void for Indianapolis in terms of a depth player in the secondary who is a special teams ace, a core performer in all aspects of S/T play.

Watts first joined the Chiefs back in 2018 in the fourth round of the NFL Draft after starring at Texas A&M. Watts got very little play on defense for the Chiefs in those four seasons, with 101 total snaps in 2020 being the career high, but he has 997 special teams snaps in that time and can step in during an emergency in the secondary.

The Kansas City Chiefs allowed Armani Watts to hit free agency and he’s now a member of the Colts.

It will be interesting to see if Watts can develop further when given a chance on another team. He was buried on the depth chart in K.C. as coaches favored other veterans like Dan Sorensen, but Indianapolis might give Watts a chance to blossom, especially considering he just turned 26 years old.

Watts was part of the original deal for cornerback Marcus Peters with the L.A. Rams along with safety Juan Thornhill back in 2018 for the Chiefs. After playing in only five games during his rookie campaign, Watts played in 16 games in each of the last three seasons for Kansas City.
