One of the most talented players still available in free agency this offseason is veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore. He also happens to be the name that won’t go away when it comes to rumors surrounding the Kansas City Chiefs

Reports continue to emerge linking the Chiefs with other teams with Gilmore in free agency, and Jeremy Fowler is the latest to mention the heavily-leaked interest between player and team. Fowler notes that the Chiefs have done their homework but are competing with others, including the Philadelphia Eagles, for his services.

Gilmore knows the drill well as a player with 132 career games played, so there’s likely no rush on his end to sign up for a new team following last season’s trade from New England to the Carolina Panthers. Gilmore could even hold out for as long as pass rusher Melvin Ingram last offseason and wait until training camp is going to begin (or is even underway) before deciding on a new team.

Free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore is the name that won’t go away when it comes to offseason rumors for the KC Chiefs.

As for the Chiefs, it makes sense why they would be interested in Gilmore, both in terms of pure talent acquisition as well as positional need. Gilmore proved last season that he still has plenty in the proverbial tank even in only 8 games with the Panthers after returning from injury. While health concerns remain about Gilmore’s stock going forward, the ceiling is worth the risk at the right price.

As for the position, L’Jarius Sneed and Rashad Fenton are the only proven options on the roster at present after the Chiefs lost Mike Hughes and Charvarius Ward in free agency. Deandre Baker is still around but the team has yet to show much belief in his reliability despite his history as a first-round pick as recently as 2019.

Gilmore, who has made the Pro Bowl in five of the last six NFL seasons, will turn 32 years old shortly after the 2022 NFL season begins.
