Earlier in the week, the Kansas City Chiefs hosted a visit with former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. On Thursday, they were able to sign him to a deal in free agency to help stop the bleeding at the position.

Per reporter Nate Taylor, the Chiefs signed Valdes-Scantling to a three-year deal worth up to $36 million with incentives.

The Packers were reportedly interested in retaining Valdes-Scantling in the wake of their own trade of a superstar wide receiver (Davante Adams), but it turned out to be the Chiefs who were able to lure him in for 2022 after trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins.

The Kansas City Chiefs stopped the bleeding at wide receiver with the signing of Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency.

The Chiefs have added Valdez-Scantling at an ideal time as the Chiefs are now looking at Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster as their primary wide receivers with a host of unproven players or projects on the roster below them. Without Hill, the team’s depth will be tested, which is why Valdes-Scantling’s deep speed is going to be an important component of the offense.

It’s possible that players like Josh Gordon or Corey Coleman could turn things around in K.C. but the team is highly likely to invest in one or more wideouts in the draft to supplement the roster.

Valdes-Scantling had 26 catches for 430 yards and 3 touchdowns last season for the Packers. He’s averaged 17.5 yards/catch in his four-year NFL career, but holds a career catch rate of just under 50 percent.
