Per a tweet from his agent, young cornerback Luq Barcoo is the latest free agent signing for the Kansas City Chiefs as the team continues to reshape its roster for the 2022 NFL season.

Barcoo came into the National Football League as a rookie free agent after going unselected in the 2020 NFL Draft. He landed an opportunity with the Jacksonville Jaguars and stuck around for the next year before being cut by the Jags when active rosters were due last summer. He had 10 tackles and 1 pass deflected in 3 games for the Jags in ’20.

From there, the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers both offered him opportunities to hang around on the practice squad, but he never played an official snap last season for either team.

The Kansas City Chiefs have added a bit more depth at cornerback with the signing of Luq Barcoo.

The Chiefs’ interest in Barcoo actually goes back to the pre-draft season of 2020 when the Chiefs checked in on him and had an interview. As a former wide receiver turned corner, Barcoo was a raw product who was always going to require time to adjust but plenty of teams showed interest then and perhaps the Chiefs want to coach him up now knowing the needs in the secondary.

The Chiefs have been able to work wonders in the past with players like Charvarius Ward, who was also a rookie free agent, so it will be interesting to see the approach here. The Chiefs have already watched Ward and Mike Hughes leave in free agency for the 49ers and Minnesota Vikings, respectively. Chris Lammons’ legal trouble will also keep him from being a part of the secondary going forward. That means there’s plenty of room for a young player to vie for reps.
