I received a call the other day from my grandmother. She asked if I had a few minutes to talk, and I thought it might be something serious. Instead, she asks, “What’s going on with Tyrann Mathieu? Could he come back to the Chiefs?”

Unfortunately, I don’t have any inside information on the former Kansas City Chiefs‘ safety or his next location, but it is an interesting question. Could he come back? It’s strange that he hasn’t already picked a new team by now. A quick Google search will give you a handful of rumors of different teams who might sign the Honey Badger: the Dallas Cowboys, the Indianapolis Colts, and even the Las Vegas Raiders.

Even if that last prospect makes you vomit in your mouth a little bit, it wouldn’t be a shock if Tyrann were already signed. First of all, it begs the question: why? There have been some rumors that nobody has offered the Landlord a contract, but I find that hard to believe. Surely somebody has offered him a contract, which means it probably hasn’t been in the price range he was expecting.

We are a week into free agency, and Tyrann Mathieu is still a free agent. This could signal a weaker market than previously thought. Could he come back?

That could mean the Chiefs made a smart gamble and didn’t offer him an exorbitant amount of money to re-sign. Although, rumors that Kansas City didn’t even offer him a contract is also surprising. They were obviously content to let him go and sign Justin Reid, but maybe Mathieu overvalued himself and is now having second thoughts?

This leads me back to my original question (and that of my grandmother): could Tyrann come back to the Chiefs? It certainly seems like a possibility. Despite his cryptic tweets and a few bad apples within the kingdom, he is universally loved by almost all Chiefs fans. It may be that he didn’t get the offers he was quite expecting, and now is rethinking whether or not he wants to come back and pair up with Reid.

But would the Chiefs take him back? I think so. Or they should at least consider it. A safety trio of Thornhill, Reid, and Mathieu sounds way better than any other combination involving Dan Sorensen (sorry Dirty Dan). If the Chiefs can get Mathieu on a cheaper deal, I think they should absolutely bring him back. But I hope he succeeds wherever he goes—except for the Raiders.
