The best remaining free agents for the Kansas City Chiefs
Linebackers
I believe the Chiefs have their two top linebackers for next season in place with Nick Bolton and Willie Gay, but with Anthony Hitchens cut and Ben Niemann, a free agent they have some linebacker snaps to fill. I don’t expect them to spend big on the position, but adding a veteran to fill some of those snaps would be a smart decision.
Affordable Linebackers I Like For KC: Jayon Brown, Josh Bynes, Kyle Van Noy
All three of these linebackers should be relatively affordable. Jayon Brown would be a good coverage linebacker addition and is just 27 years old. Josh Bynes is an underrated run stopper and could slide into Bolton’s role from last season as Bolton takes over Hitchens’s role in the defense. Kyle Van Noy has New England ties to K.C.’s now linebacker coach Brendan Daly and could add a nice veteran voice to a group led by two younger players in Bolton and Gay.
Safety
The Chiefs obviously filled the hole left by Tyrann Mathieu with the signing of Justin Reid. However, Dan Sorensen still played a ton of snaps last season and with both him and Armani Watts being free agents the Chiefs can’t be done adding to the position. Here are a few guys I would love to see KC sign as their third safety.
Players I would like as KC’s third safety: Jayron Kearse, DeShon Elliott, Ronnie Harrison, Jaquiski Tartt
All four of these guys would be a massive improvement over Dan Sorensen. Jayron Kearse may be a little too expensive, but he’d be my top pick. DeShon Elliott and Ronnie Harrison are both young guys that have enough time and starts under their belt to be reliable additions without breaking the bank. Jaquiski Tartt is a proven veteran who would provide valuable depth and experience to the safety position.
So there you have it Chiefs fans. Those are my best available players left for the Chiefs in free agency. What do you think? Do you agree with my assessments of these positions and needs? Do you like my picks of the best players available? Is there anyone you think I left out? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments below.
