Call Tyrann Mathieu

Until Tyrann Mathieu has signed with a new team, the Chiefs should remain in touch with their former defensive hero. It simply cannot hurt.

At this point, the Chiefs are not going to sign Mathieu to some long-term deal worth tens of millions of dollars. He’s clearly been replaced by Justin Reid, who signed a three-year deal worth up to $31.5M, and Juan Thornhill is also around to provide the Chiefs with a nice young tandem in the secondary. In addition, Reid looks like a nice young import who could grow into the kind of productive leader that Mathieu has been for the last few years.

For the longest time, it was assumed Mathieu would be a hot free agent commodity who would command big money but one week into things, it might not turn out that way. Of course, it only takes one team and maybe Mathieu is just being patient but other safeties have already found a home and there are more starters to be found in the draft. Perhaps Mathieu’s demands in terms of finances and/or length of commitment have changed.

That’s why it’s worth just making a simple phone call. The Chiefs’ defense calls for three safeties to be on the field a high percentage of the time, and Mathieu’s own versatility would allow him to also play elsewhere in the secondary if he were still around. He could still provide great value on the field and in the locker room, extend his relationship with an organization and city he clearly likes, and chase another ring in the process.

Bringing back Mathieu after signing Reid is a longshot, but until the door is completely closed, it can’t hurt Brett Veach to simply check in periodically to feel out any and all possibilities.

As for the next move, let’s free up a bit of money.
