Defensive Tackle

Of all the positions I’m most unsure about KC’s approach with, defensive tackle is at the top of the list. They have Chris Jones there as their interior wrecking ball. Then they have Tershawn Wharton and Khalen Saunders as rotational pieces with Jarran Reed and Derrick Nnadi hitting free agency. I don’t see Reed being re-signed after he failed to produce much last season. Nnadi could be brought back as a run stopper, but if KC wants a better interior pass rusher they will need to look elsewhere.

Then again, KC may look to spend on pass rush off the edges as opposed to at defensive tackle where they already have Jones. So I wouldn’t be shocked if they signed a good starter here or if they just brought Nnadi back and then focused on edge rushers. If they do decide to spend big here someone like Akiem Hicks or Calais Campbell would be a lot of fun to put next to Chris Jones.

If they want to spend more in the mid-tier, I still like BJ Hill who is just 26. He’s more of a run stopper but has enough athleticism to play on 3rd down if needed. If they want an interior rotational pass rusher, Arden Key flashed great talent in that role last season in San Francisco after struggling to make it as a traditional edge rusher. Pairing Key with a Nnadi re-signing could make some sense.

Now let’s move to the most needed upgrade on the roster, edge rushers.
