A Kansas City Chiefs fan’s guide to start of NFL free agency
Running Back
The Chiefs will definitely need to make some moves at running back this offseason, but the size of those moves depends on just how committed KC is to Clyde Edwards-Helaire being their feature back. If KC is still fully committed to CEH then I wouldn’t expect anything noteworthy at the position. If KC isn’t sold on him as their starter then that could lead to some more interesting options.
The Chiefs are currently set to lose Jerick McKinnon, Darrel Williams, and Derrick Gore in free agency. All three got some work this last season, with Williams being a long-time contributor and McKinnon being KC’s best back in the playoffs last year. I think re-signing one of those two makes a ton of sense. It would add someone to the roster that knows the offense and can be the feature guy (at least for a stretch) if you need him to.
I know some KC fans have been banging the drum for them to go out and get a clear upgrade at the position like Saquon Barkley or Kareem Hunt, but I am firmly in the camp that you don’t pay for running backs. You don’t give up valuable draft capital and you don’t give out big contracts. So I would rather they re-sign either Williams or McKinnon and then draft a guy in the mid-rounds to compete for snaps than to trade for or spend on the position in free agency.
Could someone like Leonard Fournette or James Conner do well in KC? Sure, but would I rather they save that money to improve the defense or #2 wideout spot? Definitely.
Speaking of the #2 wideout spot, let’s talk about wide receiver.
