Offensive Line

The Chiefs are set to lose a lot of their depth on the offensive line in free agency. Andrew Wylie, Kyle Long, Austin Blythe, and Mike Remmers are all free agents. Wylie started a lot at right tackle last season with both Remmers and starter Lucas Niang battling injuries. Wylie wasn’t good, but he wasn’t a huge problem either. I think of those four pending free agents he definitely makes the most sense to re-sign.

If the Chiefs want to give Niang another shot to earn the right tackle spot then their starting lineup is set. Wylie would be insurance in case Niang struggles or battles injuries again and he can also provide depth at the guard position. The Chiefs also have Nick Allegretti on the roster who can play both guard and center. So by just re-signing Wylie the Chiefs could go into the draft without a glaring hole to fill. Then if a possible upgrade at right tackle falls into their lap they could take him, but wouldn’t have to reach for anyone.

The Chiefs could go out and try and sign a clear upgrade at right tackle, but with so many other holes to fill I’m not sure if that position makes the most sense to spend big on with Niang on the roster and Wylie available as a cheap insurance policy. If they did want to spend on a strong right tackle, Trent Brown and Morgan Moses are probably the two best options available. After that, they’d be spending money on someone that could possibly only be a small upgrade over Niang if he’s healthy.

Next up, let’s talk about the running back position.
