As we continue to track the pre-draft interests of the Kansas City Chiefs heading into the 2022 NFL Draft, one name that has popped up comes to us from the University of Texas and a position at which the Chiefs already employ the NFL’s best.
Per recruiting analyst C.J. Vogel, Texas tight end Cade Brewer stated that a handful of teams had shown him interest with meetings at the Hula Bowl earlier this year including the Kansas City Chiefs. Other teams identified by Vogel included the Los Angeles Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Brewer decided to return for his fifth season this past year for the Longhorns as he hoped to enhance his draft stock even though he would also be that much older as a prospect (24). He ended up playing in more games than ever before, but the statistical production wasn’t exactly mind-blowing as he caught a career-high 21 passes for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns. He caught 8 total scores in his career at Texas.
The Kansas City Chiefs have shown some interest in Texas tight end Cade Brewer before this spring’s NFL Draft.
Given his body of work, Brewer, who was given honorable mention as an All Big-12 player this year, is clearly a late-round play if not a potential undrafted free agent, but we’ve seen numerous prospects find success with the Chiefs starting from that role. Brewer’s ability to play special teams is what’s going to be able to separate him from others in any competition if the Chiefs decide to bring him on board.
As for the tight end position as it sits at present in Kansas City, Travis Kelce is an obvious top target and remains an offensive fixture as the league’s best tight end. However, behind him is going to be an intriguing competition as the Chiefs watch the development of Noah Gray from one year to the next and the recovery of Jody Fortson from a season-ending injury. There are several other younger players on the 90-man roster also hoping to break in, along with the possibility the Chiefs bring back Blake Bell in free agency.
