KC Chiefs 7-round mock draft brings serious defensive help
By Evan Mead
7.230: Damarion Williams, CB, Houston
Damarion Williams is one of my favorite late-round picks, and furthermore, he has the potential to be one of the best late-round picks in this draft. I firmly believe that.
Williams, when he committed to Houston, was said to have been one of the best cornerbacks Houston has had in their program. Now, that’s not exactly saying much, but people also don’t just go around saying that if it’s not true. In this case, it’s true.
Williams is a terrific coverage cornerback who lines up primarily in man coverage. I was unable to find much of him playing in zone, so I can’t really say with certainty that he’ll be terrible at it, but it appears as though he’s working progress on that front.
Williams is a 5’10” cornerback but he plays tougher than that. He has an aggressive tendency when making tackles, which can sometimes lead to over-pursuing, but that’s very, very common in cornerbacks. Heck, that’s common in everybody it seems like.
Williams is a very good man coverage cornerback despite his size. However, I expect that he will likely have to prove himself as a slot cornerback before getting an opportunity on the outside. He’s not going to be big enough going into camp to take on bigger receivers. So he’ll more than likely start the season in Deandre Baker’s old role. He’ll be the first man up if someone is hurt.
