Arizona Cardinals

Coming into the offseason, the Arizona Cardinals can only wish that addressing their glaring need at cornerback was the only major hurdle facing them in order to make the leap to the next level in the NFC. Then came the drama surrounding Kyler Murray and the team’s commitment to winning.

No matter what ends up happening with all of the drama in the desert, cornerback still remains a significant issue for the Cards even if other positions are newly on-fire. Despite going 11-6 last season, Arizona fell apart at season’s end and allowed 38 points to Seattle in Week 18 and 34 more in their opening-round loss to the Rams in the postseason. That’s 72 points in back-to-back games and should leave a bad taste on everyone involved.

While there’s a lot of blame to go around, cornerback hasn’t been a strong suit here for a few seasons, since Patrick Peterson was healthy and making one Pro Bowl after another. This season, they leaned heavily on veteran Robert Alford (who had not played a snap since 2018) and rookie Marco Wilson for major snaps. Even former Chiefs special teams ace Antonio Hamilton had over 300 snaps on defense. Yeah, that says enough right there.

We’re not really sure how much cap space the Cardinals can create for an acquisition like this, but if they can backload a deal, Ward would be a stellar addition to the secondary here for a team in need of a higher ceiling and reliable players.
