San Francisco 49ers

The Niners are already rumored to be interested in the free agent cornerback market and for good reason. The team could use a reliable performer in the secondary almost as much as any other team in the league, and certainly if they want to take the next step forward defensively, they have to find someone who can provide an upgrade on their current options and/or provide some production upon which they can depend.

The idea of moving forward with Josh Norman is depressing at this stage and he led the team is snaps at the position last year. Jason Verrett is a talented player, but injuries have made him a wild card year by year. Emmanuel Moseley is back for one more year before hitting free agency, but yeah, we’re already running out of names on the boundary.

It helped to have Ambry Thomas coming on strong toward the end of the year, but there’s a lot of room here for a new corner and the Niners would do well to bring in a physical player like Ward, who would very much enjoy playing behind the defensive line employed by Mike Shanahan and company. Ward would be the ideal disruptive defender in the secondary making life tough off the line in a competitive NFC West, which is there are rumors making this connection already.
