Marcus Williams

Marcus Williams of the New Orleans Saints should be the No. 1 option if he hits the open market once free agency opens (He could also be a franchise tag candidate). He would be the best options to replace Mathieu when it comes to sheer talent.

We talked about Williams a bit in another article so it will be a lot of the same if you were able to catch that one. Williams is a young, talented safety who can hit and run and be versatile for any defense.

Despite being infamously known for the “Minneapolis Miracle” whiffed tackle, Williams has grown as a player and will still continue to grow at just 25 years old. Williams would be the perfect compliment to Juan Thornhill in the secondary if the Chiefs do move on with Mathieu and the Chiefs would probably feel a lot more comfortable paying Marcus Williams $15 million per year, which is his estimated market value on Spotrac.com, at 25 than they would paying Mathieu the same amount as he enters his mid-thirties.

It would be interesting to see if Williams can step in and be a leader for the defense like Mathieu was, but there’s no question that he has the potential to have a similar impact to Mathieu as he hasn’t even entered his physical prime yet and is already very good at imposing his physicality on opposing offenses but can show off some pretty good ball skills, too.
