One area that the Kansas City Chiefs will almost certainly address in free agency this offseason is the safety position. The only safety the Chiefs currently have under contract for next year is Juan Thornhill. They will almost certainly sign a free agent to that group even if it is just a depth piece.

Unless the K.C. Chiefs can also find a way to bring back starting safety Tyrann Mathieu at the 11th hour after reaching this point in contract negotiations or can make up some major ground this weekend at the combine with Mathieu’s camp, he’s going to hit the open market and probably get more interest from other teams.

Mathieu is a player we’ve talked about already and the vibe surrounding his impending free agency in his free agent profile. It truly does feel like if the Chiefs wanted him back it would’ve happened way before now and there also seems to be a difference in tone with the way Brett Veach and Andy Reid talk about Orlando Brown who will also be a free agent, saying things like the franchise tag will be used on him, as opposed to the way they talk about Tyrann Mathieu.

Could the Chiefs still bring back Mathieu? Sure, but it doesn’t seem super likely to this point and even if it was, they still need depth at the position so today we are taking a look at a few free agent safety options from big splashes to big value signings.
