The last time the Kansas City Chiefs went shopping for an offensive lineman from the University of Illinois, they found a hidden gem in the seventh round with the addition of Nick Allegretti. Two draft classes later, they might be eyeing another member of the Illini’s line (say that three times fast) with their noted interest in Vederian Lowe, per Justin Melo.

Lowe is an offensive tackle from Illinois hoping to become the next prospect from Champaign into the NFL. Four players from Illinois are in attendance this year but only one from the offensive side.

Standing at 6’6, 320 lbs., Lowe certainly has the required frame and comes with extensive experience, having started every single game for Illinois at left tackle since making seven such starts in his freshman season. He was all BIg Ten Honorable Mention but unfortunately, the Illinois offense isn’t exactly the most productive in the conference.

The Kansas City Chiefs have shown an interest in Illinois offensive tackle Vederian Lowe during the NFL Combine.

Lowe, who is already married with a couple of children, comes with the maturity of being a bit older and more responsible which could help him solidify a role as a more pro-ready prospect at the next level. It’s a deep tackle class but his extensive experience (50 games) and reputation as a quick learner could give him an edge over some others.

As for the fit, the Chiefs definitely need a bit more help outside at tackle as they lack a clear swing tackle with the free agency losses of Mike Remmers, Kyle Long, and Andrew Wylie. Perhaps one or more of those players will be re-signed, but starting right tackle Lucas Niang is also coming off of a nasty injury.

Either way, the long haul is the right way to view this interest and if the Chiefs think Lowe can develop into a capable tackle in one or two seasons, then it’s a flyer worth taking.
