KC Chiefs: Risky free agent wide receivers still worth considering
By Matt Conner
A.J. Green
This is definitely the least sexy of the options listed here as Green is likely to the point where younger options would be better. That said, he still put up solid stats last season in the desert, and his longing to compete for a Super Bowl ring could motivate him to remain reliable for at least one more season in the National Football League.
Last season with the Cardinals, Green caught 54 catches for 848 yards and 3 touchdowns from Kyler Murray. Some of his metrics last season were the highest totals in years, including yards per reception with 15.7 (highest since 2011) and yards/target with 9.2 (highest since 2016). In addition, Green is 6’4 with excellent hands and could be the sort of big reliable target that Josh Gordon was signed to be earlier this year.
That said, there were serious communication/chemistry problems for Green with Murray and this offense and it’s been clear the Cardinals were ready to move on some time ago. Green will also be another year older next season in a league where the years are longer than ever. When DeAndre Hopkins went down, defenses keyed in on Green and his stats suffered immensely, meaning Green should not be relied upon to carry the offense at all.
The Chiefs have others to do the heavy lifting, but they might also want potential dynamism in any number two in case of an injury. However, Green’s price tag would no doubt reflect that, so if he’s cheap enough, he might be worth at look for Brett Veach.
