It’s always an interesting proposition to look at the list of NFL Draft prospects or potential free agents in a given offseason to see where some hidden gems might be lurking. Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles took a flyer on injured center Landon Dickerson and came away happy. The Kansas City Chiefs did the same with Trey Smith in the sixth round and unearthed the biggest steal of all with a long-term answer at right guard.

However, not all gambles pay off and NFL history is filled with former early picks turning into busts or highly-productive players who could never stay on the field. As they say in the business, “availability is the best ability” and in a league where the acronym also stands for Not For Long, injuries are simply a part of the game.

As the Chiefs look out on a spring with potential activity ahead, there are numerous players who have a troubled history of one kind or another who are hitting free agency—specifically free agents who could be worth a closer look yet are free to be signed for one reason or another.

While there are serious risks with each of these wide receivers, each is worth considering before writing him off.

As the Chiefs hope to add another option to their arsenal of pass catchers, there are some players with more certainty attached but the price tag on those guys—e.g. Mike Williams, Chris Godwin—is also higher. If the Chiefs are interested in saving some money and buying low in the open market, here are a few options worthy of consideration despite the risk involved.
