The first ever HBCU Legacy Bowl is set for this coming weekend, on Saturday, February 19th, and it’s exciting to see the star quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs invovled in a meaningful way as he’s been named an honorary captain, per a news release on Wednesday.

The Legacy Bowl is a new pre-draft exhibition a la the annual East-West Shrine Game or the Senior Bowl, put together in an effort to help college players looking to make the leap to the professional level—mostly the NFL—show off their skills in a environment that evens out concerns about competitive inferiority.

Specifically, the HBCU Legacy Bowl, put on by the Black College Football Hall of Fame, is the latest effort intended to shine a brighter spotlight upon players from historically black colleges and universities with pro hopes who might typically be overlooked because the path to a scout’s attention is already taken up by bigger schools with a greater footprint of notoriety for their programs.

Patrick Mahomes takes on “honorary captain” role during HBCU Legacy Bowl.

Mahomes’ involvement goes back nearly a year to the inception of the game when a multi-year partnership between Mahomes and the Legacy Bowl was announced last March, an agreement that brings sponsorship dollars and greater awareness through Mahomes’ involvement in the event and surrounding festivities.

The game will be broadcast on NFL Network at 2:00 p.m. C.T. from Yulman Stadium at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.
