Former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Kyle Shurmur was always a likely candidate to enter the coaching ranks. Just look at his last name. That said, it’s hard to figure anyone thought it would start this soon.
On Friday, the Buffalo Bills officially added Shurmur to their coaching staff, as NFL reporter Field Yates explains. He joins the team as a defensive quality coach,.
The switch from being a pro quarterback to a defensive coach is an interesting turn for Shurmur, but he’ll undoubtedly bring an important perspective to the mix given his experience.
Former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Kyle Shurmur is the newest assistant coach for the Buffalo Bills.
Shurmur first signed with the Chiefs as a rookie free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft after he went unselected following his career at Vanderbilt. Shurmur didn’t make the active roster at first, but carved out a spot on the team’s practice squad and stuck around on the team’s roster through the following offseason as well.
However, shortly after the 2020 NFL Draft, the Chiefs cut Shurmur in a move that cleared a roster spot and clarified the depth chart at quarterback with only Jordan Ta’amu as a developmental arm. Shurmur had previously beaten out previous competition like Chase Litton for the role.
Shurmur went on to be an assistant with his alma mater last fall and apparently, he’s now funneling that into a coaching career going forward instead of it as a way to bide his time. The move makes sense given that his father is Pat Shurmur, which means coaching is in his bloodlines.
Shurmur joins the Bills staff as Sean McDermott is in the midst of remaking some parts of his team following the departure of Brian Daboll to be the head coach of the New York Giants this winter.
