KC Chiefs 7-round mock draft: Fixing Kansas City’s defense
By Evan Mead
7.230: Cordell Volson, OT, North Dakota State
Cordell Volson is one of the more underrated players in the draft, and I feel it has more to do with the lack of film out there. Volson, in his limited film, shows traits that could be very useful for the Chiefs.
Measurables
Height: 6’6″
Weight: 319 lbs.
Hand Size: 10 2/8 inches
Arm Length: 33 6/8 inches
Wingspan: 81 4/8 inches
Strengths
The one thing that you need to know about Volson is that he is one of the most aggressive, ruthless, hard-nosed pass protectors in this draft class. There are clips out there of Volson simply just man-handling edge rushers like they weigh nothing. In fact, here’s a clip of him doing just that. (Disclaimer: he is the right tackle so look at the far side below.)
If you watched that clip you can see how aggressive and strong this guy is. He is just ruthless and could become an absolute tank at the next level. Now on that note, there are some concerns with him that I need to address.
Weaknesses
Volson is inarguably a strong tackle and is able to literally just throw edge rushers out of the play. No, that is not an exaggeration. However, he is slow with his footwork, and he doesn’t offer much upside in terms of run blocking. He doesn’t show much speed when getting upfield which leads to a lot of missed blocks. Furthermore, without much flexibility, he is easily beaten by faster pass rushers. He has to be set perfectly in order for him to make an impact block and that is what’s going to hold teams back.
How He Fits With the Kansas City Chiefs
To be completely honest, I wish I would’ve addressed the need for a right tackle earlier, but we all know how much work our defense needs. Therefore, the Chiefs, in this mock draft, went heavy defensive players.
Volson would likely take a role as a depth piece on the offensive line as Andy Reid and the other offensive-minded coaches try to develop his footwork and mechanics. Until then, he’d likely just be another Prince Tega Wanogho.
