Josh Gordon

This one might elicit a laugh at first, but we’re talking about a list of Chiefs players who could shock fans here and Josh Gordon would definitely qualify.

Gordon signed with the Chiefs after the first quarter of the regular season after he was reinstated by the NFL following a year away from the game. His history of production created some real hope around Gordon’s ability to be a big physical receiver to work in Sammy Watkins’ former role. Unfortunately, nothing worked out for Gordon as expected, at least in terms of production.

The Chiefs clearly trust Gordon because he’s not only played in 12 games but he even started seven of them including several down the stretch. The sum of that playing time however was a mere 5 catches for 32 yards and 1 touchdown on 14 targets. To fans, it felt like Gordon’s drops likely matched his catches and it just looked like a failed marriage even after a few games.

However, the Chiefs have continued to give Gordon playing time and they’ve said all along his time is coming. Various other receivers have stepped up to carry the load in games, such as Mecole Hardman’s first 100-yard game last week or Byron Pringle serving as the leading receiver in other late-season games. Gordon could certainly insert himself in this mix if he’s able to hang onto the football (or if Mahomes decides to throw his way).
