Drew Lock might remain in place

The Broncos are in an odd place when it comes to quarterback. While they obviously need to make changes at the position, they might not want to overreact and skip over any potential Lock has to do the job if given a real chance.

For those on the outside, the story in Denver is that Lock is still unproven given the learning curve that everyone knew he needed along with the horrible job done by Pat Shurmur as offensive coordinator this season. It hasn’t helped Lock’s development to go back and forth with Teddy Bridgewater on some see-saw. Shurmur’s playcalling has also been weird—abandoning the run, red zone issues—and he’s been the scapegoat from analysts and fans for this year’s offensive woes.

The Broncos will bring in some competition this offseason and they might even import a major player if the planets align for the right person and price. But Lock also showed the gutsy side that drew the Broncos to him in the first place on Saturday night. Remember, he’s rarely played with a healthy batch of pass-catchers like Tim Patrick, Courtland Sutton, Noah Fant, and Jerry Jeudy. He was also 4-1 at the end of his rookie season when given a chance.

Before casting him aside, Lock might have earned himself another look—at least to compete for a starting role in 2022—with his play against K.C. in the finale.
