Darrel Williams is questionable to return with toe injury
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t sure if we’ll see any more of running back Darrel Williams after he injured his toe earlier in the game against the Denver Broncos in Week 18. The team has designated him as questionable to return.
On Saturday, Williams came into the game chasing 1,000 yards from scrimmage and he got enough stats to at least get that much to eclipse a personal mark he’d wanted to reach coming into the season. Williams finished the game, unless he returns, with 7 rushes for 17 yards and another 3 catches for 30 receiving yards.
The Chiefs are currently ailing at the position with lead back and former first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire also on the mend. He went down with a shoulder/collarbone injury two weeks ago against the Pittsburgh Steelers and has sat ever since. He’s likely ready to come back but the Chiefs played it safe this week by declaring him out in advance of the postseason.
Darrel Williams is questionable to return for the Chiefs vs. Denver.
As for Williams, he has looked comfortable when given starter’s reps in the wake of Edwards-Helaire’s injuries this season. Unfortunately, that leaves the Chiefs with only a couple of healthy players out of the backfield in Derrick Gore, an undrafted free agent who has looked very good in limited duty, and veteran Jerick McKinnon, who only recently came off of injured reserve himself.
On the season, Williams has 144 rushes for 558 yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground. He also has 47 catches for 452 yards and 2 more touchdowns through the air so far this season. He’s played in all 17 games in the regular season for the Chiefs.
