Coming out of the Kansas City Chiefs‘ win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday were a couple key injury concerns that will cause fans to watch closely for news updates in the days to come. But when it comes to star safety Tyrann Mathieu, his use of an X-Men reference might provide a bit of relief.

On Sunday evening, Mathieu looked as if he’d injured himself late in the game and the Chiefs reinforced this by designating him as “out” shortly thereafter with what they called a quad injury.

After the game, head coach Andy Reid added the word “contusion” to the injury without saying anything else about it. He also didn’t add much to the shoulder/collarbone injury suffered by running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Given the lack of information, it’s easy to want to jump to conclusions but Mathieu himself took to Twitter after the game to offer some post-game reflections and responded to a fan’s question by making a reference to Wolverine.

If you’re familiar with the comic book character (or if you’ve watched Hugh Jackman movies) then you’ll know one of Wolverine’s special powers is his regenerative ability to heal himself. If he’s the real Wolverine, then it’s possible Mathieu means he either has retractable claws or that he can heal himself. Or maybe he’s just indirectly letting us know that he’s good to go.

We’re also pretty sure that something like this is how Mathieu looks to opposing quarterbacks which is what makes him so valuable in the secondary.

While we’d love to hear something official from the team to just cover the bases, it helps to at least have some humor and something positive coming straight from the man himself. We can’t wait to see Mathieu back out there next Sunday in an important game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
