Football players love to play for a coach who believes in them, which must mean the Los Angeles Chargers are over the moon to have Brandon Staley as their coach. So far in the team’s game on Thursday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs, Staley has gone for it on four fourth downs with just over 6 minutes to go in the third quarter already.

Unfortunately for Staley, the results haven’t been good. Analytics say that it’s good to go for it on a short fourth down call or to go for the touchdown at times instead of taking a short field goal. The Chargers have had two separate series with first-and-goal inside the Chiefs’ 10-yard line (and several plays inside the five) and the Chargers came away with zero points in both instances.

From the first series of the game, the Chargers failed to score and the same was true of the team’s final series of the first half. Then coming into the second half, the Chargers gave the ball back to the Chiefs at the KC 28-yard line in the third quarter when Herbert couldn’t complete a pass to tight end Jared Cook. I

t’s not that the attempts have been bad, since several players have dropped fairly easy throws from Justin Herbert. However at some point, you have to wonder how many points that Staley has left on the field (or allowed to the Chiefs) by being so aggressive. it’s also clear from the conversation on Twitter that not everyone agrees with his approach.
