Former Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt is now available in free agency once again after being released by the Atlanta Falcons on Monday. NFL reporter Field Yates has word of the Falcons’ move in order to create roster space for veteran tight end Hayden Hurst to come back from injured reserve.

Colquitt will now look for another chapter to his incredibly long NFL career after he was first drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs back in the 2005 NFL Draft. In 15 seasons with the Chiefs, Colquitt set a number of special teams records. During his tenure with K.C., Colquitt went to the Pro Bowl twice and was a 2021 All-Pro by Pro Football Weekly.

It was clear a change was coming as the Chiefs invited offseason competition in his final couple of seasons with the team. At first, he beat out competitors like jack Fox, but it wasn’t long until the Chiefs eventually released him outright in the spring of 2020, after at least having the chance to win his first Super Bowl, in favor of undrafted free agent Tommy Townsend, who is still the team’s punter at present.

Dustin Colquitt is now a free agent again after getting released by the Falcons.

After his release from the Chiefs, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Colquitt for his only home away from Kansas City but it’s been a bit of a whirlwind since that moment. After a couple of months in Pittsburgh, he landed on the practice squads of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and then back with the Chiefs in 2020.

Colquitt got an opportunity this year with the Falcons and punted in six games for them until this release. So far this season, he has 23 punts with an average of 47.7, which would serve as the highest average of his impressive career.

Colquitt left the Chiefs as the most accomplished punter in team history. He holds the franchise record for most punts (1,124), most punting yards (50,393), and longest punt (82 yards).
