Standing up to great quarterbacks

This goes along with the whole competition bit previously discussed, but it’s important to note that the Chiefs defense has looked exceptional in recent weeks. They’ve held opponents to just under 13 points per game during the current three-game win streak, and four of their last five opponents have been held to 17 or under (with 27 points allowed to the Titans in Week 7 as the anomaly here).

It’s also helped that the Chiefs have acquired Melvin Ingram, which has allowed the pass rush to blossom at the right time. Chris Jones and Frank Clark are back to being the disruptors they were expected to be when the season began and Jarran Reed is making his presence felt inside. The linebackers are growing into a strong unit with the high potential of Willie Gay Jr and Nick Bolton, while a still-young secondary is turning the corner with L’Jarius Sneed and Rashad Fenton turning in great seasons thus far.

But how will this team handle the great quarterbacks remaining on the schedule? Earlier in the year, when the defense was thin, broken, and confused, they lost to the likes of Lamar Jackson and the Ravens, Justin Herbert and the Chargers, and Josh Allen and the Bills. If things are coming together, is it because they’ve played Daniel Jones, Jordan Love, and Derek Carr?

It will be interesting to see how the defense looks against Dak Prescott on Sunday against the Cowboys. It’s also important to note that they’ll face Herbert again along with Joe Burrow later in the season. However, the Chiefs also get the weak arms of either Ben Roethlisberger or Mason Rudolph when facing the Steelers late in the year and Teddy Bridgewater’s Broncos team is also slated for two games. The Chiefs’ defense will need to show up strong against those great QBs left on the schedule in order to gain confidence for the postseason.
